BEE FOR LITERACY!
SUPPORT WCLC BY ENTERING A TEAM OR SPONSORING THE BEE!
The Bee for Literacy is an adult spelling bee in which businesses, schools, and organizations enter teams to compete for the winning trophy as well as to support adult education. Join us in cheering on our community’s “Super Spellers!”
The WCLC Bee Beneft is an evening of unforgettable fun that heightens community awareness, shares our impact, and increases the understanding of the vital role that adult education and literacy play in our community.
This is not your traditional fundraiser! It is an evening of competition, fun, and excitement. Adult spelling teams of two compete against each other in elimination rounds until the last team standing wins. As the spelling happens, spectators may spell along at their tables.
Our goal is to fund WCLC's impactful literacy programs: no-cost, one-on-one tutoring for Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, GED preparation, Citizenship instruction, and the Jail Literacy program.

WHY WE NEED WCLC IN WALWORTH COUNTY
There is a perception that literacy services are not needed in Walworth County, yet statistics show:
-
16% of Walworth County residents lack basic literacy skills. An estimated 16,000 adults need literacy support.
-
9% have no high school credential.
-
Walworth County’s poverty level is at 9% (family of four earning $26,500 or less) and 24% fall into a category of limited assets and income. Although they are working, they do not earn a living wage. Data shows that 43% of adults with low literacy rates also have low income levels.
THE IMPACT OF YOUR INVESTMENT IS CLEAR
Residents who have completed 100 hours of adult basic education have increased opportunities of becoming employed, being promoted, and achieving a 53% higher income. Improved literacy skills reduce the burden on social services and reduce jail recidivism. Future generations are likely to experience academic success as a result of their parent’s improved literacy.
The WCLC students have achieved significant successes. They have earned degrees, obtained U.S. citizenship, become employed, and opened new businesses. They have advocated and communicated for themselves and their families at appointments, meetings, doctor visits and have become active and engaged community members. These adult students have achieved dreams, and have overcome lifelong barriers they never thought they would conquer.
Walworth County Literacy Council provides stability to families and ensures a more educated, reliable, and efficient workforce. With improved literacy, individuals are more likely to gain confidence and become involved in their communities.
